I'm sure it's not the only one, but a GautengOnline school has been sitting for over a year and a half unused, and probably won't be used until two years after it was installed. Why isn't it used? No electricity.
Alastair Otter at Tectonic has stepped up the editorial advocacy content a notch recently with two articles: Why is the Deputy President signing deals with Microsoft? questions the sudden rise of the "open choice" rhetoric (just after that term became fanciful in Microsoft cirlces), and Africa needs free software, not slick marketing talk counters the propaganda being pushed equating Free Software with something that is free but not useful. With Alastair writing about it, I don't feel so bad about not doing so myself.
My favourite open source magazine, Tectonic has just announced that it's first ever readers' choice awards has entered the nominations process. If you're a reader, help them out by nominating a piece of software or a South African supplier of open source services. (I didn't see a place KnowledgeTree might fit, unfortunately.)

Oh happy days - it seems that while the standard consoles are not in stock, a GameCube bundle with Mario Kart: Double Dash is now available. I also note the best games store in the country has a Platinum GameCube and Resident Evil 4 bundle that they import.
It seems the eFiling FAQ had not been updated, and that they've been quietly supporting it despite the notice in their FAQ. But now the FAQ is updated with a list of browsers that includes Firefox, Safari, and Konqueror. Apologies to eFiling for taking their FAQ at its word. I'll report back on my actual registration once I have the information I need to do it.

Oracle is having a developer day on 7 November, and I got an invite to attend, meet and chat to the Oracle and Oracle-using guys, including an opportunity to do an interview with the Oracle tech team. Unfortunately I probably can't afford to fly up for a day, but I promised to mention it. 7 November, Vodaworld in Midrand, 08:30 to 17:00 - phone 011 781 8608 to organise a seat.
It's been over a year since my last post on this subject. As a recap, over two years ago, I sent them an email about their service only supporting Internet Explorer. After a number of reminders via email and phone, I sent off a last-ditch attempt via email and found a new person to call. Yay, a reply which says they support some stuff, and are working on others, and they'll keep me informed of their progress. Just to say I've started the process again, since there hasn't been any change.
One thing I forget earlier, part of iteration 2 work on the KnowledgeTree contract was bulk import.
Iteration 2 of the contract that's given me the opportunity to improve KnowledgeTree's insides was made up of implementing transactions on all document functions, adding entries into the history of documents that moved, bulk import and the addition of tree-like metadata.
In addition to Metadata Versions and the improved permissions system, the first iteration of improvements to KnowledgeTree included editable help pages and nested groups.
